What Type of Stress Do You Suffer From?

It is easy to become overwhelmed with aspects of life that can cause the physical manifestation of the effects that stress can have in our lives. What many people don’t realize is that there are many types of stress which can be felt. This is an effective way to deal with the stresses of everyday life, rather than becoming upset – determine the type of stress which is being felt at a certain point.

There are two types of stress that have been identified by researchers, these are: eustress and stress. One type of stress is beneficial to the body and the other type of stress has been known to cause harm to the processes within the body.

Eustress can be identified by a general feeling of anxiousness or anticipation, rather than feelings of dread which are associated stress. Most people experience Eustress through the processes of a job interview or when undertaking a new experience. As mentioned before, Eustress can be beneficial to the body.

There is a certain uncertainty which is associated with Eustress but the outcome is not going to cause any harmful processes to occur within the body. It can be compared to the cold feet that bride’s experience as they are about to walk down the aisle or the nervousness of a man about to propose to his future wife and the anticipation that comes in hopes of the answer being a yes!

Although a fear of the unknown in present, these stresses often result in a positive outcome; unlike stress which can be associated with frustrations, fears and an overwhelming feeling of dread.

Symptoms that have been associated with working in a stressful environment are frustration and a feeling of dread when arriving to work each day. Negative stress occurs when these experiences are repeated every day and there is extensive exposure to negative feelings.

Unlike Eustress, there are no benefits which are associated with experiencing stress. Prolonged stress can lead to heart attacks, strokes and other stress related disorders. The effects of the immune system have been measured and the negative effects have been demonstrated in numerous studies. When the individual is under high levels of stress, it can lead to the development of illnesses which are usually fought off by the immune system.

Dealing with stress can be completed by keeping a stress journal, which is an effective way to reduce and manage stress, especially in the workplace. Take note of the following aspects in the stress journal:

  • The cause of the stress that is felt
  • The location that the stress began
  • The people around you when the stress began
  • The events that were happening at the time of the onset of the stress

Determining patterns of stress can help to reduce the symptoms and the onset of the harmful stresses which lead to disease. Changing your outlook to combat stress is an effective way to manage the stresses associated with daily life.
