Depersonalization is an uncommon mental condition that is rarely mentioned in panic and anxiety researches and literature. It is a feeling of detachment and complete independence over oneself, similar to that of a spirit watching over their dead body, in a sense that this person is also unable to do anything about what is going on. People who experiences panic attacks encounter depersonalization, being separated from the reality of the world and self. This is a very terrible experience for people because it can drive them crazy and if not helped, it could make them lose their mind permanently.
To find out if a person is experiencing depersonalization, you need to be observant. A person talking to someone and suddenly feels removed from the other is one of the first signs of this phenomenon. It could get worse and once it does, it becomes very alarming. Such an occurrence could last for days, if not longer. So what causes depersonalization?
It is believed that depersonalization is brought about by a delay in mind processing and perception. It is a result of constant exposure to stress and anxiety that triggers a lag in communication between the neurotransmitters in the body. The effects are similar to that of marijuana but different in a sense that drugs can be taken away whereas this mental condition can become permanent if help is not given. Since depersonalization is not that well-known by people, not many of us know how we can manage and get rid of it. So by being aware of this illness, we can do what we can to be able to go through life without it. As a very damaging and potentially permanent condition, we want to do as much as we can not to encounter it.
So, the question is, how do we get rid of depersonalization? Depersonalization is brought about by extreme anxiety that has not been properly taken care of. By relieving ourselves of anxiety, we will also rid of depersonalization.
- First, you need to do away with things that cause anxiety. As most of us probably know, anxiety is brought about by excessive stress. So by avoiding stressful activities and situations, we can prevent being anxious and consequently, avoid becoming prone to depersonalization.
- Second, you need to take things slow. Do not be too eager to fix everything you see. Accept that you can only do so many things in a day so it would not make sense to work too hard just to achieve everything. Do not also deal with everyone’s problem as if it were your own. Know when you need to act on things and when you should just let things be. Do not force yourself to do something you really cannot do.
- Third, manage depersonalization. You need to accept that you are experiencing this mental condition and that you are fully capable to get overcome it. The problem lies when you are in denial. You have to accept that it is exists in you and that you can work on getting rid of it, because truly, you can.
- Fourth, know that you have people you can count on. You do not have to go through this alone. You can always seek help from others such as friends and family who are more willing to help you if only you would reach out to them.
Depersonalization is indeed scary. It is bad enough to suffer anxiety attacks, how much more when you can no longer attach yourself from the real world? Surely, no one wants to experience this mental condition, but you need to accept it if you are undergoing such a problem. Accept it and believe you can change it. Only then can you completely free yourself from this rather pointless problem and by doing so, you can live a more productive and meaningful life.
