Stress is something everyone should avoid because it causes so many problems to your health. It makes your more prone to diseases and disorders. Additionally, it also complicates your relationships with family, co-workers and friends because when a person is under stress, it is common to feel irritable and unsociable.
People often tell us to manage stress so we can live a better, fuller life. But the question is, instead of managing stress, why don’t we just reduce and eliminate it altogether? Here are some of the foolproof ways to get rid of stress.
- Take a breather. Take time off whatever you are doing. You deserve it every now and then. It does not have to be something that requires you to be away for long- a day, a few hours, even a few minutes will do. This is a great way to release pent up emotions, clear the mind, and make the body calm and rested. You will find that when you get back from a break, you will be more rejuvenated and ready to continue.
- Laugh it out. As the old adage goes, laughter truly is the best medicine. Laugh at your mistakes and do not take things too seriously. You can share some jokes with your buddies, watch a funny show or movie, or anything that will make things lighter.
- Exercise the mind and body. There are many ways to do this. For the mind, you can meditate, get a massage, or just say a prayer. You can exercise the body through walking or hiking along the trail, yoga, going to the gym, Tai-Chi, jog or play any sport you love. When you exercise the mind and body, you will be able to release your stress effectively.
- Treat yourself to some good time. It does not have to be anything extravagant, but you need to pamper yourself every once in awhile. You have been working really hard so yes you do deserve it. You can go shopping, go to a spa, you can cook a good dinner for yourself or even just stay an hour in a hot bubble bath. Anything that makes you feel special and pampered will be great.
- Organize and manage time wisely. Many causes of stress are due to lack of time management. We cram and do so many things at once because we did not use our time fully. Always plan your day. Get rid of the things you do not need and focus on what is important to you. Anything that is not should be taken out.
- Say no when you have to. Sometimes it is difficult for us to say no because we do not want to offend or hurt others. But if we never turn down a request or an offer, we end up with heaps of work! Know your limits and say no when it is over that already. When we overwork, we become stressed. So if you cannot do it, by all means say no.
- Get enough sleep. You need to sleep at least 7-8 hours a day. Anything less than that would mean you are not getting enough sleep your body requires. When a person lacks sleep, he or she becomes more susceptible to sickness, and even worse, this person will feel groggy and grumpy in the morning! If you sleep well at night, you will wake up to a better day, and you will be more productive at work and at home.
- Spend time with the people you love. There is nothing better than being with the people you love. Your kids, your husband or wife, your girlfriend or boyfriend, your parents, your brothers or sisters, your best friend… these people will give you the peace and joy you need to rid yourself of stress. Take time out with them and you will feel much better.
Ask help from others. You should realize that you are not a superhero. You do not have to do everything by yourself. People will be more than willing to help you if you just reach out to them. Have you heard of the saying that goes, “two heads are better than one”? It is true. Swallow your pride and tell your friends, family, co-workers if you need their help on something.
