People often confuse anxiety attacks and panic attacks; many think they are one and the same. However, each illness is different from the other and knowing how they differ from each other can provide a world of benefits to those who suffer from such conditions. Not knowing whether you are suffering from a panic attack or an anxiety attack hinders you from getting the appropriate treatment.
So what is the difference? Let us begin by defining each medical condition. An anxiety attack occurs when something terrible happens to you or those around you. Things that worry you and bring serious problems to your life are those that can cause anxiety attacks. Things that add stress to you can trigger anxiety symptoms such as shaking, tachycardia and shortness of breath. On the other hand, a panic attack is brought about by sudden reactions coming from your mind or body. It triggers sensations that are similar to stroke, fainting, choking and loss of control. It still shows similar symptoms with anxiety attacks because it brings about shortness of breath and tachycardia as well as severe body shaking. But the difference is that a panic attack is an immediate reaction to what you feel and think whereas an anxiety attack is the result of accumulated negative emotions and stress. It is important to note however that those suffering from anxiety attacks will most likely develop panic attacks. In this case, similar treatments for both will be necessary.
Most commonly, treatment for anxiety attacks and panic attacks vary so knowing which condition you have will greatly help you find the right medication for it. The most recommended treatment for panic attacks are anti-depressants which are often prescribed in low doses because adverse reactions for over-dosage can also trigger panic attacks most especially if the user is very susceptible and sensitive to drug reactions. In treatment of anxiety attacks however, regular doses can be taken for anti-depressants and it will not cause adverse effects to the body at all.
Drug Treatment
Drugs belonging to the category of anti-depressants are commonly referred to as benzodiazepines such as Ativan, Xanax, Klonopin and Valium. These drugs work wonders for the treatment and control of panic attacks and anxiety attacks however, they have the tendency to be addictive, thereby causing dependency on those who are taking them. Problems happen when a person becomes dependent on these drugs because they can no longer function normally without them.
Natural Treatment
There is a treatment called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which provides remedy by making psychological improvements. For panic attacks, this is done through interoceptive healing or self healing while anxiety attacks are treated by mind relaxation. When you go through treatment for panic attacks, you may need to work on agoraphobia healing first because you need to overcome the fear of experiencing panic attacks before you can eliminate the root cause of the condition. When people try to undergo interceptive healing, it becomes more difficult if he or she is afraid of facing it. So by eliminating agoraphobia, treatment becomes more effective.
Treatment is always effective when done consistently. You have to believe that it is possible to overcome panic and anxiety attacks. The two may mean two things but they can both be remedied through medications, attitude and discipline.
